SUNY Cortland’s Department of Substance Abuse Prevention and Education is implementing a social norms awareness campaign targeting all young adults, students and full time residents, between the ages of 18-25 living in Cortland County. The campaign is called Majority Rules and focuses on providing young adults accurate information about alcohol use vs perceived use, so that young adults can make informed decisions based on fact not hype.

According to Robyn Forster, counselor/coordinator Substance Abuse Prevention and Education at SUNY Cortland, “this campaign is unique because it targets both residents and college students within the community. Most campaigns of this kind target only college students.” Joan Stivers, Executive Director of Seven Valleys Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse also states that, “each messages in the campaign is based on information that was collected from one-on-one surveys conducted on the SUNY campus and throughout the community. This information helps us focus on what is real vs perceived.”

Majority Rules is funded by a State Incentive Grant Enhancement from the NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Prevention and the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention.
